Recent Beginnings

Building upon a well-established track record of organizing and running successful teacher training workshops, Kimball Union Academy was awarded a federal appropriation of almost $750K in 2005 to develop an ongoing series of environmental leadership institutes for both teachers and students. The funding was supported by Senator Judd Gregg (NH) and comes through the US Department of Commerce. It is administered through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and has enabled the school to establish the E. E. Just Environmental Leadership Institute for Students and Teachers.

Laying the foundation for the leadership of tomorrow

The Institute is organized into two separate programs. The first brings together students with a keen interest in environmental science and leadership to explore a specific problem or issue and propose solutions. Since 2005 over 120 students from around the world have joined us in either New Hampshire or Costa Rica to explore environmental issues susch as local effects of global warming and the challenges and benefits of implementing Kyoto protocol. Students in New Hampshire have worked on a variety of student-led projects ranging from an energy audit here at Kimball Union Academy to proposing 'steps towards sustainability' for a local restaurant chain owner. Students participating in the journey to Costa Rica, have worked with local landowners on problems specific to the Osa Peninsula.

The second program brought a series of one-week educator institutes on everything from designing inquiry-based curriculum units on environmental education to customizing systems-models for use in inquiry-based labs to community mapping in our state-of-the art computer lab. Our one-week programs have attracted over 100 teachers from across the country since the start of the E. E. Just Environmental Leadership Institute.
