It's All Connected: Integrating Global Issues & Sustainability Across the CurriculumFacilitators: Kim Rakow Bernier and Gilda WheelerFor middle and high school teachers (25 max) Session I: July 9-14, 2006 Institute DescriptionIn this workshop, presented by Facing the Future: People and the Planet, participants will discover activities, tools and strategies to more effectively use global issues and sustainability as a contextual framework for teaching core subjects! We will examine the trends that shape global issues in the 21st century by outlining the interconnectedness of population, poverty, consumption, conflict, and the environment - and explore ways in which students can participate in their solutions. We will look at trends in the availability of key resources and what these trends portend for future global security. Beginning with an historical perspective, we create a framework from which to consider the connections between the global issues that underlie and exacerbate ethnic, civil and trans-boundary conflict and migration. Once we have an understanding of these issues, via graphics and hands-on activities, we introduce a way to make these lessons stick with service learning and action. Given that the challenges of the 21st century require us to think and learn in new ways, we'll also explore tools and activities to help identify and shift the mental models that shape our world and determine future actions. Facing the Future's hands-on activities will be used to provide examples of how to put these abstract concepts into action. Participants will build upon their teaching expertise and be challenged to think creatively about global issues and global sustainability and their integration into all aspects of the curriculum. Reading, writing, and technology connections will be made throughout the institute. Participants will have the opportunity to work individually and in small groups to share, design and develop their own strategies to bring global sustainability into their classroom or across the school in new ways. This interactive strategy portion of the institute will allow participants to learn from each other and to begin developing ways to immediately apply what they have learned in the workshop.
