A Sense of Place: Environmental Literature

Facilitator: John Kluge

Sessions I & II

Workshop Description

This course is designed for educators interested in bringing an environmental awareness into their traditional courses. We will examine a variety of writers, styles and genres, both to investigate new material and to discover how some traditional material reflects an environmental sense of place. Readings will involve short excerpts from a wide range of writers; classes will model student-centered discussion, with many opportunities to share ideas and experiences and to make use of the beautiful natural setting of Kimball Union Academy. Whether discussing the literature in class, modeling writing exercises under a tree on campus, or canoeing on Grafton pond, the emphasis will be on providing teachers with some essential background, some creative ideas, and a good sense of how an “environmental focus” can enliven and deepen any curriculum.
