A Day in the Life

Imagine waking up one warm, sunny July morning next to your roommate, a hilarious sophomore from California who has gotten you into mountain biking. After breakfast, you hop on a bus with your small team and drive to a put-in on the Connecticut River. You deftly guide canoes down the scenic river, stopping occasionally on sandy islands to test the water for pesticide build-up. Stop—over there, you spot your first bald eagle! Everyone waits silently for the raptor to make his move. He does, and you feverously paddle to follow his path down the riparian corridor.

Later that day, you return to campus with your water samples and test them in the lab you have set up yourselves. You prepare for your trip to the White Mountains tomorrow, where you will be gathering bark samples. After all, you are on a mission to solve a problem—and with only two weeks, you must move quickly.

That evening, after a refreshing swim, you gather with the other groups for a pizza party and to hear a guest speaker present a slide show on his experience thru-hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. His story is so moving, you are inspired to try the hike yourself. Maybe next summer…

This is just one day of fourteen that you could be spending with the E.E. Just Environmental Leadership Institute this July. The program is open for students ages 11 to 16, from all backgrounds and experiences, and has been designed by students themselves—-middle and high school students like yourselves who spent two weeks during the summer of 2005 creating their ideal summer program with us.
