Four Key Components
Four Key ComponentsCOMMUNITYThe Institute focuses on local problems that occur nation-wide, in the hopes that students will apply their knowledge to their own schools and communities after completing the institute. Students will also spend one day engaged in a local community service project, from river clean-ups to trail maintenance. As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” GLOBAL PERSPECTIVEBased on a systems approach, the Institute will encourage students to draw links between issues, showing the interconnectedness of all environmental problems. The global significance of each decision will be questioned and debated, and the theme of sustainability is interwoven throughout each discussion. SCIENTIFIC THINKINGBased in KUA's Environmental Science department under the leadership of Dr. Dean Goodwin, who has achieved high merit for his work on the Environmental Science Advanced Placement Board, the Institute will provide students with a solid understanding of the scientific method, spanning topics in physics, earth science, chemistry and biology. Using state-of-the-art equipment for testing water, air, soil, and much more, students will learn advanced scientific concepts through discovery, hands-on experiences, and research. LEADERSHIPOne goal of the Institute is to give students the opportunity to experience teambuilding, both on a challenge course and in a classroom. Students will identify their roles within a group, challenge themselves to extend beyond their comfort zones, and understand qualities of good leaders. This experience will provide students with the power to apply what they've learned to their own communities. |
